With final $23.3 million payment, Ontario airport transfer of ownership is complete

Ontario International Airport Authority sold bonds and paid Los Angeles World Airports remaining payment.

Recovery on horizon for Ontario International Airport as passenger volumes show improvement

(Ontario – April 15, 2021) Ontario International Airport (ONT) has regained more than half of the passenger volume lost as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which nearly decimated global air travel a year ago, according to monthly data released by airport officials today.

Hawaii lifts quarantine requirement for Ontario, Calif., fliers with negative Covid Clinic test

(Ontario, California – April 14, 2021) – Southern California’s Ontario International Airport (ONT) welcomed the announcement from Hawai’i Governor David Y. Ige that effective April 17, travelers from ONT will be able to bypass the Aloha state’s mandatory 10-day quarantine with a negative COVID-19 test performed by a trusted testing partner. Ontario is the first airport in Southern California to earn the designation from the Hawai’i State Department of Health.

According to the governor’s announcement, travelers may choose from two options – an expedited PCR test with next-day results or a rapid molecular NAAT test that provides results within an hour. The tests must be administered within 72 hours of departure from ONT.

“We’re honored to be a Trusted Testing Partner with the State of Hawaiʻi. At Ontario Airport, we’re committed to the safety and well-being of our passengers, and throughout the pandemic, we’ve implemented industry-leading health protocols, including our on-site testing clinic. Hawaiian Airlines’ new service to Honolulu has been very popular with ONT passengers, and we look forward to creating even more travel opportunities to the great State of Hawaiʻi,” said Alan D. Wapner, President of the OIAA Board of Commissioners and Mayor pro tem for the City of Ontario.

Ontario’s local testing partner is the Covid Clinic which offers drive-through testing on Parking Lot 3 daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The ONT site, open since November, offers tests by appointment and on a drive-up basis.

“Since the onset of the pandemic, ONT has worked hard to provide clean, safe facilities for our customers, as well as services that will offer peace of mind as they embark on their travels,” said Mark Thorpe, OIAA CEO. “The Covid Clinic has been a great – and trusted – partner in offering quick, reliable COVID-19 tests administered in the comfort and privacy of our customers’ vehicles.

“The trusted testing partner designation is a proverbial shot in the arm for Ontario as we continue our steady recovery from the downturn in air travel resulting from the pandemic,” Bowman said.

Just last month, Hawaiian Airlines began nonstop service from ONT to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (NHL) five times a week. Alaska Airlines flies from ONT to HNL with connections in Portland, Ore., and Seattle.

United Airlines serves HNL, Kahului Airport (OGG) on the island of Maui, Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole (KOA) on the island of Hawaiʻi and Lihue Airport (LIH) on the island of Kauaʻi via San Francisco.

Delta Air Lines services HNL and OGG from ONT via Seattle and Salt Lake City. American Airlines operates flights from ONT to HNL, KOA, OGG and LIH via Phoenix.

Ontario Airport teams with Sammy Hagar, Delaware North to create innovative, new customer experience

(Ontario – April 12, 2021) Local rock music legend Sammy Hagar will be bringing his global brand to Ontario International Airport (ONT) as part of an innovative partnership between the airport, Delaware North and Hagar’s Santos Tequila and Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum product lines.

The partnership is the latest example of ONT’s shift toward fully immersed marketing experiences since moving management and control of airport advertising in-house. Under the partnership the full Santos Tequila line and Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum are available at the Rock & Brews restaurant in Terminal 4, and are featured on an in-house cocktail list, takeaway drink cups and an array of giveaways, such as luggage tags, caps and mugs. Rock & Brews staff also have Santos-branded uniforms.

“Working with Delaware North and the Santos brands, we’re going beyond traditional static advertising and creating a true customer experience,” said Dan Cappell, Chief Commercial Officer for the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA). “And, of course, we’re thrilled to partner with one of our region’s own, the great Sammy Hagar.”

Hagar, who grew up in nearby Fontana, achieved international stardom as a solo artist and lead singer for the band Van Halen, and in 2007 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen. As a businessman, Hagar founded the Cabo Wabo Tequila brand and restaurant chain, and, more recently, Santos Tequila brand with Emmy Award-winning chef and restaurateur Guy Fieri. Santo Tequila is one of the fastest growing tequila brands in North America. It is made with 100% pure Blue Weber agave and the blanco tequila was recently named by the Robb report as a “top 7 tequila in the world.”

Bill Summers, General Manager of Delaware North, which manages food and beverage concessions at ONT, said sales of Santos Tequila and Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum have exceeded expectations.

“To have a local rock Legend actively involved and supporting the campaign has resonated with our customers, and we look forward to working with Mr. Hagar and the team at OIAA to further strengthen this partnership,” Summers said.

The marketing partnership is the second to be announced in recent weeks at ONT, America’s fastest-growing airport three years running.

“Having a dedicated resource to promote and manage our advertising and sponsorship program has already proven that the decision to bring this discipline in house was the right one for our business,” Cappell said. “We have a number of projects that we are still working through the details on and look forward to announcing these in the near future.”
