(Ontario, California – May 22, 2019) – The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is joining forces with Ontario International Airport (ONT) to share information with airport travelers about new REAL ID driver licenses and identification card requirements that take effect next year.
For the first time, DMV representatives will staff information-only booths, beyond the TSA checkpoint, every second and fourth week of the month on Wednesdays and Fridays. The goal of the partnership is to allow customers more time to ask questions and speak to DMV staff as they wait for their flights.
“We are bringing information directly to air travelers to explain their identification options to fly domestically,” said Acting DMV Director Kathleen Webb. “Our partnership with Ontario International Airport is a win-win for both of us in ensuring passengers are adequately prepared to pass through airport security when the new federal ID requirements take effect October 2020.”
“We’re pleased to partner with DMV in raising awareness of REAL ID and how important it is going to be for the traveling public to update their driver license or identification card,” said Mark Thorpe, Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA). “These information booths are one more example of our commitment to making travel as convenient as possible for our customers.”
Beginning October 1, 2020, the Department of Homeland Security will require passengers to show a valid passport or other federally approved document, like a REAL ID driver license or identification card, to board flights within the United States.
The DMV staff working at the airport will be prepared to answer customer questions and provide valuable time saving information for customers wishing to visit a DMV field office to obtain a REAL ID. No applications for REAL ID driver licenses or identification cards will be accepted at the DMV information booth.
To apply, individuals must visit a DMV office and bring the following documents:
- One Proof of Identity – Original or Certified
- (Examples: Valid passport, birth certificate, etc.)
- One Proof of Social Security Number
- Two Proofs of California Residency – Paper Copies

(Ontario, California – May 22, 2019) – Ontario International Airport (ONT) is poised to welcome more than 1.6 million air travelers this summer, an increase of 13.9% over summer last year.
Based on current flight schedules, an estimated 1,657,185 airline passengers will arrive and depart ONT from Friday, May 24, the start of the Memorial Day weekend, through the Labor Day holiday on September 2. Ontario handled 1,455,418 travelers during the same period in 2018, which was an increase of 14.5% over 2017.
“Travel demand is always brisk in Southern California, particularly so during the summer months, and passengers are increasingly choosing Ontario as their gateway airport,” said Mark Thorpe, CEO of the Ontario International Airport Authority. “We look forward to showing off all that our airport has become.”
Named the fastest growing U.S. airport by a leading travel publication, ONT will continue to add new flights over the summer months:
- Delta Air Lines, which began daily, non-stop service to its Atlanta hub in April, will add a second roundtrip in June.
- United Airlines announced it will launch daily, non-stop service from ONT to Houston, the carrier’s headquarters, beginning next month.
- Southwest Airlines will offer four new daily flights to San Francisco and expand its current service to Denver.
Ontario’s 13.9% growth in summer travel is more than four times the expected increase nationally. According to Airlines for America, the trade organization for leading U.S. air carriers, 257.4 million passengers – an all-time record – are expected to travel between June 1 and August 31, a 3.4% increase from last summer.
Airline passengers have plenty to look forward to as they travel through ONT. Since last summer, the airport completed a more than $8 million upgrade of its dining and retail concessions which now include such popular brands as Einstein Bros bagels, Rock & Brews restaurant, Wahoo’s Fish Taco and Wolfgang Puck’s WPizza. Travelers can also access premium Escape Lounges in terminals 2 and 4 which began welcoming guests earlier this year. Free, high-speed wireless internet service is available throughout the airport.
Security screening areas will be equipped with new, state-of-the-art SecureTray bins manufactured with antimicrobial technology to inhibit the growth of bacteria on the surface of the trays. The sleek, ergonomically designed trays provided by Florida-based SecurityPoint Media, with germ-resistant technology developed by North Carolina-based Microban International, enable security screeners to quickly and efficiently identify passenger belongings in need of closer inspection.
Passengers who drive themselves to ONT can pre-book and save on parking through the airport’s homepage at FlyOntario.com. The web site includes Spanish and Mandarin-language translations. Curbside valet parking is available immediately in front of the passenger terminals.
Meanwhile, popular app-based ride hailing companies Uber and Lyft continue to serve ONT along with taxicabs, shared ride vans and limousines. Another ground transportation option is Omnitrans with service to ONT every 15 minutes, 7 days a week.

(Ontario, California – May 1, 2019) – S&P Global Ratings has revised its outlook of the Ontario International Airport Authority to positive from stable and affirmed its long-term rating of ‘A-‘ for the Inland Empire airport’s revenue bonds.
The enterprise risk profile reflects S&P Global Ratings analysts assessment of Ontario International Airport’s market position, generally stable enplanements and very strong economic fundamentals in the Inland Empire, low industry risk compared to other sectors and strong management and governance.
“The positive outlook reflects our expectations that ONT’s financial risk profile, based on pro forma financial metrics, will be strong even with additional borrowing plans,” the S&P Global analysts wrote.
“S&P’s revised outlook enhances our opportunities to grow ONT” said John M. Schubert chief financial officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority. “Ontario leadership has worked to successfully transition ONT to local control. Efforts to develop facilities and incorporate services that appeal to airlines and passengers has resulted in consistent increases in commercial air, making ONT one of the fastest growing airports in the United States. Airlines and air travelers are bullish on ONT and so are we.”
The S&P Global Ratings report noted ONT’s successful transition to local control in 2016 in its rationale for the stronger financial rating.
“The ratings also reflect their opinion of [ONT’s] strong enterprise risk and financial risk profiles tempered by potential risk stemming from the authority’s transition of ownership and control of operations of ONT from the Los Angeles Department of Airports.”
